Should you wish to, you can also access The Oak National Academy’s website Online Classroom with nearly 10,000 free video lessons, resources and activities, covering most subjects, from Reception to Year 6. Featherstone Academy also makes use of several online applications such as mymaths, spag.com, doodle, Bug Club and Times Tables Rockstars which will be valuable for the children to access whilst at home. You are likely to have your child’s login details for all of these, however, if you are unsure, then please message your child’s class teacher for further information.
Whilst it would be our preference for all children to be in school all of the time, the provision we are offering for remote learning is as close to the children being in school where possible, however this won’t always be the case as some lessons, will not translate well to remote learning. Remote learning, will still provide children with the knowledge and skills they need to make progress, whilst keeping them engaged and motivated to learn.
Questions and Answers about Featherstone’s Remote Learning
When can I contact staff via class dojo? (As from 11th January)
To ensure the work/life balance of staff, they will be available for you to message and contact via dojo between the hours of 8:30am and 4pm. Any messages sent out of these hours, may not be replied to until the specified times.
Is my child expected to do work at home when they are ill?
If your child is ill, they must take the time to rest and recover and are not expected to work from home. However, if a child no longer feels ill, they should access online learning as soon as possible.
What if I don’t have access to the internet?
Where families do not have access to the internet children can work through CGP books that can be collected from school.
Will my child receive a phone call from their teacher whilst they are working from home?
Wellbeing phone calls will be made to families during the lockdown period.
Why are the teachers not delivering live lessons?
At Featherstone Academy, safeguarding is of the upmost importance and our Academy Trust feel that the Safeguarding of our children will be put at risk if children have to connect to a live lesson from home with at least 30 other people online at the same time.
In addition, we respect the rights of our staff as well as our children and whilst there is a lack of proven effectiveness and appropriateness for primary school aged children to attend live lessons, we will be posting daily pre-recorded lessons online.
Live lessons mean that both a device and the children have to be available at a specific time of the day, putting additional pressure and expectations on families who are often juggling working from home whilst trying to support their child. When lessons are pre-recorded, children can have a level of independence to choose which order they would like to undertake their learning.
Live lessons require both a device and a greater internet band width that not all families have access to, creating an inequality of opportunity. For families with more than one child isolating, there would be an even higher demand on the availability of technology at a specific time.
In the classroom, teachers are highly skilled at being responsive to the children’s needs. However, this type of interaction is not possible in the same way online. On the other hand, a pre-recorded lesson if available, can be paused, listened to again or fast forwarded, allowing children additional time and support if needed to complete a task. Due to the nature of online video communications, a live lesson to 30 children at once would have a more blanket/ passive approach.

To ensure that your child is able to continue to learn from home in the event of individual isolation or as a result of us having to close a whole bubble, we would like to share our home learning plans with you in. So far, we have been really proud of the children’s commitment to their learning at home. We understand that this is difficult for parents and we will do as much as we can to support you.
If your child is absent because they are awaiting test results, or your household is required to self-isolate, online learning will be provided by the class teacher.
On day one of isolation, please access the following online resources:

As from day two, if your child is in EYFS, Year 1, Year 2 or Year 3, we will be uploading 5 lessons a day: phonics/spelling, English, reading, maths and topic on Class Dojo.
If your child is in Year 4, Year 5 or Year 6, we will be uploading 5 lessons a day: English, reading, maths and topic via Microsoft Teams.
Please also ensure your child reads daily.
It is really important that your child continues to learn during this pandemic and your support with these bubble closure plans is greatly appreciated. We are of course hopeful there will be limited need for this, but it’s important we are all prepared for any such event.
If you have any concerns about your child’s access to the home learning or queries during a period of isolation, please contact your child’s class teacher via Class Dojo.
